\"\"<\/a>Valentine’s Day is that time of year when we celebrate how much we love and care for those close to us, whether they are a spouse, partner, child, or friend.<\/p>\n

A few popular items that we give away are flowers, candies, and chocolates. But have you ever wondered why chocolate? How did this tradition start?<\/p>\n

It all started in the 1840s when celebrating Valentine’s Day became a popular day to celebrate love by the English-speaking world. Victorians showered their loved ones with cards and gifts as a way to express their love for the holiday.<\/p>\n

By now, Cadbury had developed a new way to enjoy chocolate. So, Richard Cadbury decided to get in on the craze by placing bite-sized chocolates into heart-shaped boxes and selling them.<\/p>\n

Cadbury advertised the boxes as multifunctional because they were so pretty that people could use them to store trinkets and other items when all the chocolate was gone.<\/p>\n

These boxes became popular until World War Two when Valentine’s Day celebrations were downsized due to saving sugar. Today, some families still have these Victorian- Era boxes in their possessions and are considered valuable by collectors.<\/p>\n

In 1907, Hershey’s chocolate launched its famous “kisses,” which got its name from the sound the machine would make when producing the chocolates.<\/p>\n

In 1923, Stover’s also started selling Valentine’s Day chocolates in heart-shaped boxes.<\/p>\n
